.s. and is about to leave eastern canada. we tally the storm aftermath. >>> and the redskins make the final cuts to the roster. who is in and who is out as we head toward the season opener against the dallas cowboys. >>> good morning and welcome to fox 5 morning news sunday. i'm melanie alnwick. sarah simmons is off today. we have several developments in the recovery from the gulf spill. >>> but a house fire in the district. this started around 4:00 in the 4900 block of minnesota avenue northeast. the flames quickly spread. at one point the home was fully engulfed and the home is a total loss. the owners were not home at the time and the heat was so intense that an adjacent home suffered damage. we have no word on the cause. >>> well now to the latest on earl. the storm is weakening as it heads away from canada's eastern coast and the storm is being blamed for one death in nova scotia. a man drowned trying to tie up his boat. a lot are without power. in new england, earl spared cape cod before heading to canada. by 60 mile-per-hour winds pounded this home. parts of it actually slid into the sea

chinn, 9 news now. >>> tropical storm earl is now eyeing newfoundland, canada, after swiping cape cod last night and dumping a lot of rain. it's explained for one death in nova scotia, a man who drowned while trying to secure his boat. little damage on cape cod. some residents of nantucket said it packed quite a punch. >> the surf, i have never seen it that high in 35 years. wake up tomorrow and decide whether we are a homeowner on nantucket or not. >> it will continue to be a concern throughout the weekend. >>> new developments in the b.p. oil spill investigation. crews raised the blowout preventer to the surface today. the 300 ton device was supposed to monitor the deep water horizon for any signs of trouble and seal the pipeline if necessary. that did not happen in april when an oil rig exploded killing 11 workers. the blowout preventer will be turned over to the fbi as part of the investigation into the deadly explosion. >>> meantime on the national mall, a group of protesters staged day one of a two-day rally to call for a safe environment in the gulf. organizers say they want to
for the east cost of the united states. but what is earl dumping on canada? fox 5's glen talbot and american is in the weather center with the latest. >> reporter: it went right over nova scotia and my mother is there. i called her. she said plenty of rainfall and some really strong winds hit her area. let's take a look at earl right now. because it actually has maximum sustained winds at 65 miles per hour. racing northeast over the gulf of st. lawrence expected to pass over the extreme north eastern portion of quebec and newfoundland over the course of the night. still tropical storm warnings there, however. power outages and downed trees is what happened across the province of nova scotia as well. once it moves into the colder waters over the next 24 hours or so it will lose its tropical characteristics. here at home things are a lot calmer. pretty nice conditions. plenty of sunshine. a few clouds skirting to the north of us. other than that not bad. under the influence of a nice ridge of high pressure. the current temperatures 74 at national. 64 at baltimore. and 65 in dulles. and taking
